Living and Serving Even in Uncertain Days

Are things as crazy and uncertain in your neck of the woods as they are here? It’s good to rest in the knowledge that God is bigger than all this! We really have quite the opportunity to show our trust in Him, when people are faced with uncertainty all around them.

When Jerusalem was destroyed by Nebuchadnezzar in 586, Jeremiah wrote the following:

“The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.”

Lamentations 3:22-23 (ESV)

Our world is not collapsing as hard as Jeremiah’s – what a wonderful example!

Bible Institute, students traveling home, and remote learning

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, on March 15th we announced to the Bible Institute students that we would not be continuing in the classroom for the remainder of this academic year, but instead would be continuing classes online. Our 57 students from many different countries were advised to make plans to return home within the next few days.

All our students dressed up on Monday to get a “Graduation” picture before they began their unexpected travels home.

Thankfully, most students were able to get home in time. However, the few students who were not able to travel because of the international restrictions are staying with us until it is safe for them to travel home. We are taking measures to ensure their health and safety.

So, after an unexpected Spring Break, we opened our classes back up on Monday, March 30th, and even right now, our students are watching classes and completing assignments across 10 time zones! Please pray that they will be able to find creative ways to share the Gospel and disciple others wherever they are!

Standing in the gap!

This pandemic has led to some great financial challenges across the globe, and Word of Life Hungary is no exception. We had to completely close our campus, meaning thousands of dollars in lost revenue due to the loss of tuition payments, loss guest group income, and potential drops in summer camp and Bible Institute enrollment. We also anticipate many more families will need substantial help in sending their kids to camp or to study at the Bible Institute. In addition, we continue to maintain our buildings, the Castle and 74 acres of property. Our entire team has willingly taken hefty pay cuts, some have been laid off, and we have taken other “belt tightening measures” as well. But it will not be enough. We believe that once this financial firestorm subsides, Word of Life Hungary will come roaring back stronger than ever. People here are asking spiritual questions and looking for answers. And we are ready to share the Good News of the Gospel with them. We just need a financial bridge to “fill in the gap” to get beyond this current crisis. Please pray that God will provide up to $200,000 to “close the gap” during the next year, so that we can continue the work that God called Word of Life Hungary to do more than thirty years ago. Would you also be so kind as to prayerfully consider helping? For a more detailed financial report, or for questions and comments, write our director Alex Konya at alexkonya@wol.org.
